AN ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH FOR JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL TEXTBOOK “ENGLISH ON SKY 2 FOR SMP/MTs CLASS VIII”

Textbooks play a crucial role in education because they serve as a tool for teachers to use in providing material to students as well as a source for both teachers and students in the teaching and learning process. The aim of this research is to find out whether the English textbook is good based on the criteria proposed by Mukundan et al. (2011). The object of the study is English textbook “English on Sky 2 for SMP/MTs Class VIII” that was published by Erlangga in 2018. The evaluators are two English teachers in different schools in Malang. They are chosen as evaluators because they have been using this English textbook as a learning resource in teaching English. The data in this research were taken using textbook evaluation checklist adopted from Mukundan et al., (2011). This research use document analysis to analyze the book. The results of this study are 75% textbook has met the criteria of good EFL textbook in terms of the relation of the textbook to the syllabus and curriculum, the methodology of the textbook, the suitability of the textbook to learners. the listening content in the textbook, the speaking content in the textbook, the writing content in the textbook, the vocabulary content in the textbook, and the exercise in the textbook. Meanwhile, 25% textbook has not met the criteria of good EFL textbook in terms of the physical and utilitarian attributes of the textbook, the efficient outlay of supplementary materials of the textbook, the general of the learning-teaching content of textbook, the reading content in the textbook, the grammar content in the textbook, and the pronunciation content in the textbook
